Get started
Whatme adds a WhatsApp chat button to your online store. After you install it, the app opens in your Shopify admin with a setup guide. Each step is checked off on its own when it’s done:
- Add your WhatsApp number. Add at least one agent with the number that will answer your customers, then click Save.
- Turn on the chat button in your theme. Click Turn on in theme. The theme editor opens with Whatme already turned on in App embeds. Click Save there to publish the button.
- Add the button to product pages (optional). Click Add to product page. The theme editor opens the product template with the Whatme block already added. Move it next to Add to cart if you like, then click Save.
- Translate the texts (optional, only if your store has more than one language). Click Go to Languages. See Languages.
- Check it on your store. Click View store and try the button as a shopper would.
- Choose a plan. Everything you need is free. Pro adds business hours, agents by language, the click report and Sidekick suggestions.
With a vintage theme, the product page step doesn’t show: that button needs an Online Store 2.0 theme.
The Status card shows whether the chat button and the product page button are turned on in your published theme.
Agents
Each agent is a WhatsApp number shoppers can write to, for example one for sales and one for customer support. You can add up to 10.
- Name and Role are shown to shoppers in the chat panel.
- WhatsApp number: the full number with country code, for example
52 55 1234 5678. Any WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business number works. - Pre-filled message: the text that appears ready to send when WhatsApp opens.
{title}and{url}are replaced with the title and address of the page the shopper is on.
With more than one agent, shoppers choose who to talk to from the welcome panel.
Greeting bubble
A short message next to the chat button, for example “Hi! 👋 Can we help you find something?”. Turn on Show a greeting bubble, write the greeting and choose after how many seconds it appears.
It shows once per visit: once it has appeared, it doesn’t come back until the shopper’s next visit, even if they close it or move to another page. If the shopper leaves the page before it appears, it can appear on the next page.
With Play a sound with the greeting, a short chime plays when it appears. Browsers only allow sound after the shopper has clicked, tapped or typed on the page, so some shoppers won’t hear it.
Languages
If your store is published in more than one language, shoppers can see Whatme’s texts in their language. Whatme saves its texts in your store so you can translate them with Translate & Adapt, Shopify’s free translation app.
Requires Translate & Adapt. Translations are made in Translate & Adapt, a separate app by Shopify. It’s free, but you need to install it in your store. If you don’t have it, clicking Translate in Whatme takes you to a Shopify page to install it. Your store also needs more than one published language, in Settings > Languages.
The Languages card, below the product page button section, lists what there is to translate:
- Chat and product button texts: the button label, the panel title and text, the greeting, and the product button label and message.
- Agent: …, one per agent: name, role and pre-filled message. Most stores keep the agents’ names as they are.
- Save your changes in Whatme. A new agent can be translated once it’s saved.
- Click Translate next to an item in the Languages card. Translate & Adapt opens with those texts. The same buttons are also on each agent and in the chat button and product page button sections.
- Choose the language, translate the texts (or use Auto-translate) and save.
The card also shows each text’s status in every language: translated, partly translated (with the fields still empty, for example “French: partly translated · Role”) or not translated. Until you translate a text, shoppers see it in your default language. When you change a text in Whatme, update its translations too: they don’t change on their own.
In the translations, keep {product}, {url} and {title} as they are: they are replaced with the product or the page.
If the card says Whatme couldn’t prepare its texts for translation, reload the page. If it keeps happening, write to us with the detail the card shows.
Business hours Pro
Set the days and hours each agent answers. Turn on Business hours in the agent and set From and To for each day, or mark the day as Closed. When it’s off, the agent is available at any time.
- Hours use your store’s time zone, which you can change in Shopify’s settings. Shoppers see when an agent is back in their own time.
- For the whole day, use
00:00to24:00. If the end is earlier than the start (for example 20:00 to 02:00), the range ends the next day.
Below the agents, Outside business hours sets what all agents do when they’re offline:
- Hide the agent. If no agent is available, the chat and product buttons don’t show.
- Show as offline, shoppers can still message, with the time the agent is back.
- Show as offline, without a link: shoppers see when the agent is back but can’t message them until then.
Agents by language Pro
If you have a team for each language, choose the languages each agent appears in. In the agent, under Languages, uncheck the languages where it shouldn’t show. For example, your Spanish-speaking agent can appear only to shoppers who browse your store in Spanish.
- An agent with every language checked also appears in the languages you add later.
- If a language is left without agents, the chat button and the product page button don’t show in that language. The Languages card warns you.
- On the product page button, if the chosen agent doesn’t appear in the shopper’s language, the button uses the first available agent of that language.
The option shows when your store has more than one published language.
Click report Pro
The report shows how many times shoppers clicked your WhatsApp buttons in the last 7, 30 or 90 days: in total, per day, by agent, by type of page and by button (chat button or product button). Clicks show up a few seconds after they happen. Days are in UTC.
Clicks are counted on every plan, so when you upgrade to Pro the report already includes the clicks from before, up to the last 90 days. Whatme only stores the counts, never who clicked.
Products with the most clicks
Clicks on product pages are also counted by product, and the report lists the 10 products with the most clicks. A click usually means a question before buying, so these are the product pages most worth improving. Clicks from before Whatme started counting products don’t have a product, so this list can have fewer clicks than the product pages row.
Ask Sidekick
If Sidekick, Shopify’s assistant, is available in your admin, the report has two buttons:
- Analyze with Sidekick: Sidekick gets the report’s numbers, compares the products with the most clicks with their orders and suggests what to add to their pages.
- Improve with Sidekick, next to each product: Sidekick reviews the product’s title, description and variants, tells you what information is probably missing and drafts a better description with a short FAQ.
The question shows up in Sidekick as your message, and Sidekick doesn’t change anything in your store unless you ask. The buttons don’t appear if Sidekick isn’t available in your store or in the Shopify mobile app. If you see “Whatme is turned off in Sidekick”, turn Whatme on in Sidekick’s app settings and try again.
Google Analytics
Turn on Send clicks to Google Analytics and each click sends a whatsapp_click event with:
whatme_agent: the agent’s name.whatme_source:floatingorproduct.page_type: the type of page.
It works when your theme loads Google Analytics 4 (gtag.js) or Google Tag Manager. With Tag Manager, create a Custom Event trigger for whatsapp_click.
If you installed Google Analytics or Meta with a Shopify app
The Google & YouTube and Facebook & Instagram apps run apart from your theme, so they don’t see the WhatsApp button. Add a custom pixel to send them the clicks:
- In the Whatme app, choose Google Analytics 4 or Meta Pixel and click Copy code.
- Click Open Customer events (or go to Settings > Customer events in Shopify) and click Add custom pixel.
- Name it Whatme, paste the code and replace the ID with yours.
- Click Save, then Connect.
The custom pixel also needs Send clicks to Google Analytics turned on: that option sends the clicks to every analytics tool, Meta Pixel included.
For developers
Every click also dispatches a whatme:click event on document, with detail.agent, detail.agentId, detail.source and detail.page. For custom pixels, the Shopify customer event is whatme:whatsapp_click.
Plans and billing
The Free plan includes the chat button, the welcome panel, up to 10 agents, the product page button, custom styles, the greeting bubble, Google Analytics events and translations into your store’s languages.
Pro costs $4.99 USD a month or $49.99 USD a year (17% less), with a 14-day free trial, and adds business hours, hiding offline agents, agents by language and the click report with Sidekick.
Support is by email on every plan, at [email protected]. We reply within 1 business day.
To upgrade, click Upgrade to Pro in the app. To change or cancel your plan, click Manage plan. Shopify bills the plan on your store’s invoice; we never see your payment details.
Troubleshooting
The chat button doesn’t show on my store
- Check that you added at least one agent and saved.
- Check that Whatme is turned on in App embeds of your published theme and that you clicked Save in the theme editor. The Status card in the app tells you.
- Check that Show the chat button is on, and that the page type and device you’re looking at are selected in Show on and Devices.
- With business hours and Hide the agent, the button hides when no agent is available.
- With agents by language, the button hides in a language where no agent appears.
- Reload the page. If your browser keeps an old copy, try a private window.
The product page button doesn’t show
- Check that the Whatme block is in the product template of your published theme and that Show the product page button is on.
- Vintage themes don’t support app blocks. The floating chat button still works.
- With business hours and Hide the agent or Show as offline, without a link, the button doesn’t show while no agent is available.
The chat shows in my default language when the store is in another language
- Check in the Languages card that the texts are translated into that language.
- Reload the page. If your browser keeps an old copy, try a private window.
WhatsApp opens but the number is wrong
Write the full number with its country code, without the 0 that some countries add for local calls, for example 52 55 1234 5678 for Mexico or 1 415 555 0100 for the United States.
Uninstalling
When you uninstall Whatme, the buttons disappear from your store right away and Shopify removes the app’s settings from your store. We delete your store’s data, click counts included, when Shopify asks us to, 48 hours later. The privacy policy has the details.
